Clondalkin Higher Education Access Project (CHEAP)
The Clondalkin Higher Education Access Project started in 1997. Originally, it was funded by the Clondalkin Partnership and to continue to provide some of the funding. The South Dublin Urban Initiative provided funding for a number of years but that project is now at an end. Since 1998, the Department of Education and Science has provided the majority of the funding.
Over the years the initiative has supported supervised tuition four days a week, scholarships for Leaving Certificate students, Easter Revision, mid term revision, Gaeltacht grants, study skills programmes. The project has also established direct entry arrangements for pupils from the school with a range of third level institutions around the Dublin area.
With the support of the project and the funding made available and the commitment on behalf of the staff of the College to make it a success we have secured great improvements in the situation.
Traditionally, the percentage of Leaving Certificate candidates in the college going on to third level education was in single figures. In 2003, 42% of our Leaving Certificate candidates went on to third level education and 23% went on to further study in the form of PLC. This, of course, reflects the work done by teachers and students and the support of parents during the normal activities of the school but it has been greatly enhanced and supported by the existence of the Clondalkin Higher Education Access Project.
