TY Hellfire Club Visit

TY Hellfire Club Visit

On Wednesday the 19th of April, Transition Year students went on a trip to The Hell Fire Club.

The Hellfire Club is a historical landmark that is found on Montpelier Hill, Co. Dublin.

Originally, at the top of Montpelier Hill, there was an ancient passage grave with a cairn of stones stacked on top. Then William ‘Speaker’ Conolly, one of the wealthiest men in Ireland, came along and built a hunting lodge on the same site in the 1730s.

After Conolly’s death, the lodge was sold and it is said to have become a meeting place for the Irish Hell fire Club. A club that was founded in 1735 by Richard Parsons – a man known for dabbling in black magic.

In the Hell Fire Club, members were known to gamble, drink and mock religious ceremonies.

The story of the Hell fire Club is very famous around Ireland so the students were very excited for this trip.

When the students arrived at the bottom of Montpelier Hill they had to go on a forty minute hike to the top. This tested their endurance to see if they could make it to the top no matter how tired they got. Finally they arrived at the Hell Fire Club which is an abandoned lodge at the top of the hill. The students were sent off to explore the lodge for a while and eat their lunch. After this they took a group photo and then began to make their way back down.

At times the students thought they were lost but eventually they made their way back to the car park and then they went back to the school.

The Transition Year students enjoyed this trip as it was just a good time to bond with their fellow classmates.
