On Friday, the 10th of January, the two groups of TYs who had spent every Friday since September going on trips or participating in healthy cooking classes began their work experience. The students had the option to complete their work experience wherever they wished. They were advised to choose their placements wisely and to keep their future career goals in mind. It was recommended that they select a job that would provide them with experience in a field of interest or a sector where they could see themselves working in the future. Students chose to work in retail, childcare, primary schools, trades, and many other areas. This experience is essential for the students’ future as, for many, it may be their first experience of having a job. It offers insight into what it is like to work, including how to follow dress codes, accept constructive criticism, follow orders, and be punctual.
For my work experience, I chose to work at St Mary’s National School in the local area. I chose this placement because I aspire to become a teacher, and St Mary’s is also the primary school I attended. My day started later than usual at 10:30 due to the cold and icy weather, but in the future, it will begin at 8:50, just before school starts for the students. When I arrived, I met the receptionist, Lisa, in the main office and spoke to the principal, Ms Doherty, who assigned me my tasks for the day. I spent the first hour speaking to all the teachers and taking the names of their "Star of the Week." Afterwards, I went out to the yard with one of the SNAs, Martina, who introduced me to some of the students.
I took my lunch break for 20 minutes and then helped teachers hang up their art displays in the PE hall. Following this, I attended an assembly where some of the students received their "Star of the Week" certificates. I spent the rest of my day in a 5th class classroom, where I helped students with their book reports and some fun art activities in the afternoon. This gave me an opportunity to chat with some of the students and get to know them. I went home when the school day ended at 2:40. The staff and students were very kind, and I felt welcomed straight away. I really enjoyed my first day and look forward to going back next week.
