Trump Wins Back Presidency

On the 5th of November 2024, the presidential election took place in the USA. The presidential candidates for this election season were Donald J. Trump and Kamala Harris.

Donald Trump was the presidential candidate for the Republican Party, with Kamala Harris running as the presidential candidate for the Democratic Party.

The winner of the US election is not inaugurated until 20th January the following year. This is the date the presidential term commences and lasts for four years.

Vice President Kamala Harris, the running candidate for the Democratic Party, won 18 states and the District of Columbia. She currently serves in office under President Joe Biden. Kamala’s main priority, since being sworn into the White House in 2021, has been the maternal healthcare of American women. After Proposition 8 was passed, she officiated the first same-sex marriage. However, the 18 states and the District of Columbia were not enough to see Kamala elected as the first female US President.

The winner of 32 states (including all seven of the battleground states) and the presidency was Donald J. Trump. He becomes the first president since Grover Cleveland to win two presidential elections with a term in between losing one (1885 & 1893).

Donald Trump is particularly passionate about tariffs. His plan to lift the economy of the US is to apply tariffs on imports, particularly from China. Trump has long argued that China’s ability to flood the US market with cheap manufacturing has destroyed American industry. He plans to impose a 60% tariff on China and 20% tariffs on other countries. Kamala Harris, during her campaign, opposed this and called it a “National Sales Tax”, claiming it would cost families £4,000 annually.

His choice of Supreme Court judges is thought to be responsible for the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, leaving it to “a vote of the people.” He supports the decision being sent back to the states so that each state can hold its own vote on this issue. This has been applauded by pro-life supporters and criticised by pro-choice supporters.

Donald John Trump is an American politician, media personality, and businessman who served as the 45th President of the United States from 2017 to 2021. His second presidency will be closely watched not just by Americans but by the rest of the world, as wars, global unrest, and inflation are on most people’s minds.
